Jemila’s Story
Her forest is the last green belt before the desert,…
East Africa
Ethiopia is a country in East Africa, home to highlands, plateaus and dry forests. Most people here depend on the land for survival.
But Ethiopia’s environment is changing fast. The effects of the climate crisis and under-regulated agricultural practices are causing forests to disappear. Between 2000 and 2020, the country lost nearly 740,000 hectares of tree cover. Without trees, soil is drying out and turning to desert, and farmers are losing crops. As a result, over 10 million people don’t have enough food to eat.
That’s why, since 1991, we’ve been working with communities in Ethiopia to restore land, protect forests and grow resilience – one tree at a time.

The whole system exists because there are trees, and if they are destroyed it would collapse.
