Mali is home to hot, dry landscapes — from the Sahara in the north to grassy plainlands in the south. Most people here depend on natural resources to survive.
But Mali’s environment is on the brink. Rising temperatures and shrinking forests are putting pressure on people and the land they rely on. Between 2000 and 2020, over 250,000 hectares of tree cover have been lost – nearly double the area of Greater London. And without trees, once fertile soil is drying up, turning into desert. At the same time, conflict has displaced more than 400,000 people, putting greater strain on the land as people, seeking safety, are forced to move.
That’s why, since 1993, we’ve been working with communities to restore ecosystems, bring life back to the land, and grow lasting livelihoods – one tree at a time.

The project has significantly improved my living conditions. [It] provided us with thorough training, empowering us, the women, to continue processing these fruits and selling them.
